Precision cutting
(By: Tubology)

There are productions of components – obtained by bars, pipes or section bars – in which it is possible to have, even in the cutting phase, high accuracy.  It is not only the allowance in respect to the cutting length, but also the perpendicularity of the cut sides in respect to the axis of the piece, their parallelism, and the minimization of the dribble.

In fact, if it is possible to obtain such features already in the cutting phase, following trimming operations can be avoided, the costs can be reduced as well as the production time, and the components thus obtained are of a higher quality and have better functional features.  It is for such cutting operations that the Swiss company Kurt Mueller – represented in Italy by Euracciai of Milano –  developed the automatic saws Bimax.  They can use cutting disks made of rough metal, and they make it possible to obtain an allowance of ± 0,002 mm on the cutting length because of the way they are built.  In fact the structure of the machine grants an extreme rigidity, the clamps that block the bar grant the stability of the component to be cut during the cutting action.
The accurate progressing system – with micrometric setting – allows to set and maintain cutting lengths with very small allowances, even for very short pieces.

According to the models, the cutting lengths supported can be up to 1.000 mm.  The biggest  model the maximum section is Ø 100 mm, that is to say 70x70 or 130x50 mm.
The high accuracy on planarity and perpendicularity, and the enhanced superficial finishing features that can be obtained, allow the direct assembly of components, even when they are required to be air tight.
The cycle times of these Bimax saws grant a high productivity; it is even possible to perform multiple cut.
A few examples:
- multiple cut of 22 steel ST 50-1 round bars Ø 6 with cutting length of 42 mm, 4650 pieces/hour
- multiple cut of 2 aluminum pipes Ø 30 mm with cutting length of 16 mm, 2400 pieces/hour
- single cut of steel ST 37K rectangular section bars 55x16 mm with cutting length of 120 mm, 240 pieces/hour.
To cut tempered steel bars there is a specific model with an abrasive cutting disk and rotation speed up to 5.000 rpm.
Bimax saws can be provided with specific input feeders for a complete automation.  SMR type feeders can be used for round section materials, and allow multiple feeding up to two bars.  SMPH type feeders are designed for section bars, rounds, and bundles.
Kurt Mueller will expose Bimax saws at the EMO in Hannover – pavilion 16 stand C29, from the 17th to the 22nd of September.
